Maintaining excellence in quality and practice at Melba
Maintaining Melba as a centre of excellence in quality and practice is the focus of Anneke Jurgens, our recently appointed General Manager, Practice, Quality and Safeguards.
Anneke’s focus will involve embedding an innovative quality and practice framework with a dedicated team of specialised roles, to ensure that Melba continues to focus on respecting and safeguarding individuals’ human rights and achieving individualised outcomes for all the people we support.
Melba’s quality and practice framework will build upon the way in which we provide excellent outcomes to individuals we support today.
The Quality, Practice and Safeguards team is currently being expanded and will include a variety of specialised roles. Once fully in place this team will:
- Embed a strong emphasis on positive behaviour support across Melba. Positive behaviour support is a proactive, preventative and evidence-based approach involving assessment, planning and intervention that focuses on addressing an individual’s needs, their environment, and their overall quality of life;
- Empower our support staff across all services at Melba through regular, real time coaching and mentoring to use positive approaches in our practice, so that we achieve high quality outcomes for all individuals we support; and
- Develop a new internal research arm to guide our evidence-based practice.
The Quality, Practice and Safeguards team will work closely with individuals and their formal and informal supports to undertake a person-centred planning process, so that we can holistically understand each individual we support. This will include understanding what is important to them in their life, and how they wish and need to be supported to achieve their identified outcomes.
The team will include outcomes specialists in areas such as communication, complex health and positive behaviour support, who will complete assessments and develop plans to ensure that individuals are well supported according to evidence-based practices. As well coaches/mentors will work alongside our support staff to assist in implementing those plans and strategies.
