Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2019
This July, Melba Support Services stands with fellow Australians in recognition of NAIDOC Week to celebrate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including their culture, history and excellence.
This year’s NAIDOC Week honours the theme ‘Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future‘. In Victoria, NAIDOC Week is being observed from 1 – 7 July 2019, while National NAIDOC Week is from 7 – 14 July.
“At Melba, we recognise the significant role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and their connection with the land on which we operate,” said Glenn Foard, CEO, Melba Support Services.
“We have great respect for the beliefs and practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We are also committed to developing a deeper understanding of the past, present and desired future of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities,” said Mr Foard.
The words Voice, Treaty and Truth from this year’s NAIDOC Week theme are in particular reference to the three key elements in the reforms set out in the 2017 Uluru Statement from the Heart, which represent the unified position of First Nations Australians. “This year’s theme asks all members of the community to strive to build an inclusive society that utilises cross-cultural problem solving for the betterment of First Nations Australians.”
“We hope as many Australians – including all those who form part of our Melba community – will join in the celebrations, learn more about our nation’s rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, and explore the many unique stories from the world’s longest continuing culture,” concluded Mr Foard.
